Shirley MacLaine is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the American Film Institute (AFI).The actress will be presented with the prize at a gala tribute in Los Angeles on 7 June 2012.

Shirley MacLaine born Shirley MacLean Beaty, April 24, 1934 is an American film and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist and author, well-known for her beliefs in new age spirituality and reincarnation. She has written a large number of autobiographical works, many dealing with her spiritual beliefs as well as her Hollywood career. In 1983, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Terms of Endearment. She was nominated for an Academy Award five times before her win.

Her first film appearance was in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry, which earned her a Golden Globe award for most promising female newcomer in 1955. Her other credits include The Children’s Hour opposite Audrey Hepburn, The Apartment, co-starring Jack Lemmon, Steel Magnolias and Postcards from the Edge.
